Associate Professor Ron West

ANCORSRon is a fisheries scientist with over 30 years experience in research, policy development and management. His PhD (University of NSW) dealt with the fish, fisheries and fish habitats of coastal rivers. He has carried out extensive research in many areas of marine science, including fisheries (commercial and recreational), fish biology, aquatic ecology, habitat mapping and modelling (GIS), statistics and estuarine ecology.

Prior to joining the university, Ron held many senior research and policy positions in the government, and provided research and policy advice on natural resources management, including fish and fisheries, threatened species, estuary and river management, marine impact assessment, marine park selection and forest policy. He is currently member of several government advisory committees, in particular the NSW Fisheries Scientific Committee (Aquatic Threatened Species) and the Southern Coalfields Inquiry. Ron has over 70 research publications dealing with fish and fisheries, estuaries, wetlands, coastal lakes and marine ecology. Currently he has several major research projects, in Australia, Indonesia and Philippines. Ron lectures in environmental science, marine and fisheries science and is supervising a range of PhD, Masters and Honours research students.
