Dr Mary Ann Palma

Mary Ann is a Research Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security. She assists the Director of the Centre in various projects and researches related to international fisheries law and policy and maritime security.
Mary Ann finished her PhD with the Centre and her dissertation analysed the adequacy of the Philippine legal, policy, and institutional framework to address illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. While doing her PhD, she has been involved with the Centre's ACIAR-funded project on the Management and Policy Frameworks for IUU Fishing in Indonesian and Philippine Waters.
Prior to her PhD studies, Mary Ann has been part of various initiatives contributing to ocean policy formulation for the Philippine government in her work as a Researcher at the University of the Philippines. She was actively involved in legal and policy researches on the delineation of the outer limits of the Philippine continental shelf, revision of the Philippine baselines law, revision of the Philippine National Marine Policy, mapping of the maritime zones and resources of the country, and Philippine-China conflict and cooperation in the Kalayaan Island Group, among others. Mary Ann has also participated in several international conferences and has published a number of articles on fisheries and other marine policy issues. Related to her research work at ANCORS, she is currently engaged in researches and government meetings pertaining to the bilateral fisheries relations between the Philippines and Indonesia and the Philippine participation in the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
