Quentin Hanich

Quentin Hanich is a Senior Fellow at ANCORS which he joined in early 2005. Mr Hanich co-ordinates and leads much of the Centre's provision of advice on international fisheries and oceans governance for Australian and regional agencies, particularly in regard to the negotiation and implementation of international fisheries and marine conservation treaties. Recent research consultancies include (amongst others): Building Capacity in Pacific Fisheries Governance and Institutions; Provision of support for the conduct of ASEAN Workshops on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) and Human and Institutional Capacity Building; Illegal foreign Fishing in Waters of Mutual Interest between Australia and Indonesia; various Analysis' of the proposed draft South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation; Governance Options for the Conservation of Marine Biodiversity on the High Seas.

Mr Hanich has advised Australian delegations to various international fisheries and marine environment treaty meetings and has worked throughout the Pacific region. Mr Hanich lectures and writes on: oceans governance; international fisheries; Antarctic and marine conservation; international environment and fisheries fora; and strategy development.

Prior to joining the Centre, Mr Hanich coordinated NGO sustainable fishing campaign in the Pacific and earlier IUU fishing campaigns in the Southern Ocean. Mr Hanich has considerable experience at sea, including voyages investigating IUU fishing activities in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean and the Sub-Antarctic Ocean. Previously, he worked for the Australian Department of Environment and Heritage. Mr Hanich has degrees in Antarctic Studies (Hons) and Arts. His honours thesis focused on IUU fishing in the Southern Ocean (Enforcement and Compliance Challenges to the Management of the Heard and McDonald Islands Fisheries). Mr Hanich is also undertaking a PhD (part time) analysing the fisheries governance and institutional arrangements in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
