International Fisheries Law
This course will focus on contemporary issues in international fisheries law. It will start with an examination of the fisheries provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the gaps and shortcomings in the law of the sea framework. The course addresses the political economy of international fisheries and the historical evolution of international fisheries law; the fisheries regime under the Law of the Sea Convention; post-law of the sea global binding instruments; post-law of the sea global non-binding instruments; regional fisheries organisations; the South Pacific regional organisation framework; fisheries access agreements; GATT/WTO and international fisheries law; certification; management of by-catch under international fisheries law; the compliance and enforcement framework; legal aspects governing fisheries data; and emerging issues in international fisheries law.
