ANCORS RESEARCH AGENDA

High quality, leading edge research is at the heart of ANCORS role as a centre of excellence in maritime knowledge services for Australia and the western Pacific, Indian and Southern Ocean regions and beyond. The ANCORS Research Agenda presents dynamic, strategic and proactive approaches to defining the maritime agenda for the future. It is our intention to influence decision makers and policy developers by raising awareness about, developing understanding of and presenting solutions for dealing with emerging, forward looking issues vital to our future. ANCORS can play a key role in informing the way Australia and the region deals with the competition for marine resources, marine environmental concerns, and use of the oceans by exploring related governance, policy and security issues and offering solutions. We see this as our major challenge and contribution.

The ANCORS Research Agenda presents an overview of our priorities, areas of interest and capabilities as we seek to make a difference in the rapidly evolving world of maritime related policy, law, governance, security, strategy, resource management and the environment. Our Research Agenda will inform those who will be the beneficiaries of our work and attract those with a passion for our areas of research to join us.

ANCORS Research Programmes

In conducting its research activities ANCORS seeks to provide real-world outcomes that will be of assistance to decision makers and that will enhance the quality of policy-making. Research that concentrates on areas of confluence or overlap between major subject matter in the maritime environment can offer significant insights. This philosophy is applied across the ANCORS Research Agenda, which comprises three Programmes:

Outcomes of Our Research Approach

Good decision making and policymaking usually requires consideration of a broad range of factors. Good policy outcomes require balance and degrees of compromise between often competing issues and perspectives. Research that adds value to decision making and policy development therefore needs to compile and analyse information from a variety of sources and perspectives to present useful knowledge outcomes. Where appropriate, ANCORS will employ a multi-disciplinary approach to researching complex issues. In other instances ANCORS research contribution will come from a single or narrow range of highly specialised and expert perspectives, with policy makers having the option of combining this with information from other sources. Specialised perspectives on complex maritime contextual issues that may be applied include:

  • policy,
  • legal,
  • economic,
  • geo-spatial,
  • science and technology,
  • social,
  • ethical, and
  • security.
