Captain Peter Martin is currently a Marine Pilot operating on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. As a practicing mariner, he is particularly focused on maritime training where he has been invited as a specialist onto a national working party looking at maritime training issues.
Following a 23 year career as a seagoing Officer in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Peter completed the Ship Master's course at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania . With further sea service in Australian merchant vessels, he attained a Master Unlimited Certificate of Competency.
During his Naval career Peter was; a Principle Warfare Officer, in charge of a bridge simulator maritime training department, and a navigation (Pilot) specialist. His RAN career highlights included; command of an Australian warship, a 12 month sabbatical in Malaysia pursuing strategic studies, service in Navy International Relations at Defence Headquarters in Canberra, service with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - South East Asian Division, and completion of a Masters of Defence Studies at the University of New South Wales.
In pursuit of research as a PhD Candidate at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) University of Wollongong , Peter has undertaken a number of initiatives to explore the broader dimensions of his thesis: ‘ The Strategic Implications of Australia 's Maritime (LNG) Trade with China . These initiatives included: the civil recognition of RAN Seaman Officer mariner skills, passage on a LNG vessel to China in support of the RAN Maritime Trade Operations Organisation, and Maritime/ Naval Technical Advisor for the TV drama series ‘SEAPATROL'; each of these pursuits have added texture to his understanding of ‘maritime strategy'.
Peter is an active member of the International Nautical Institute, the Company of Master Mariners, and Rotary International . He has been published in a number of maritime media and maintains an active interest in regional maritime affairs through participation with a wide area of maritime networks.
