Kresno Buntoro commenced his PhD with the Centre on a full time basis in 2007. The research for his thesis is entitled “An Analysis on the Legal Issues relating to Navigational Regimes through and over Indonesia's Waters” with supervisors Prof. Martin Tsamenyi and Dr. Clive Schofield. It will include an analysis of current policies and legislation in Indonesia on navigation. The work will also attempt to identify reforms needed within Indonesia's national legal and policy frameworks.
Prior to his PhD studies, Kresno Buntoro has been part of various initiatives contributing to ocean legal framework for the Indonesian government in his work as an Indonesian Navy Officer. He was actively involved in legal and policy researches on the implementation of the LOSC in Indonesia. He has also participated in several international conferences and presented several papers on marine policy issues and public international law. He is an Arbitrator/Conciliator on Law of the Sea, DOALOS, UN from Indonesia since 2001.
