The subject of John's research is a critical analysis of the law and policies associated with compulsory pilotage in Australian ports.
Having first gone to sea as an apprentice in 1961, John has been (successively) a deck officer, shipmaster, lecturer, senior administrator in government, a lawyer and a consultant. John was President of the Marine Board of Victoria for many years with responsibility for pilotage, the administration of maritime safety and the development of State port and marine policy. At the national level John was a member of the Marine and Ports Group of the Australian Transport Council and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
John has lectured in maritime law and international maritime policy to undergraduate and post-graduate students at the Australian Maritime College and his consultancies include conducting an investigation into the safety of pilotage in the Great Barrier Reef for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
John's great passion is fly fishing for trout with his major ambition (yet to be realised) to catch a trout of 10lbs or more!
