Visiting Professorial Fellow
Philip Symonds is Senior Adviser - Law of the Sea in the Petroleum and Marine Division of Geoscience Australia, Canberra, and an ANCORS Visiting Professorial Fellow. He has written widely on the geological development, definition, resource potential and environmental management of Australia 's marine jurisdiction. He has been a member of several Australian delegations involved in maritime boundary delimitation with adjacent countries, and since 1994 has led Geoscience Australia 's Law of the Sea project charged with collecting, processing, interpreting and analysing all necessary geological and geophysical data to support definition of the outer limits of Australia 's vast areas of extended continental shelf. He was a member of United Nations Groups of Technical Experts on Continental Shelf matters in 1993 and 1995, and was elected to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf for a five-year term in April 2002.
