Andrew Forbes
Visiting Senior Fellow
Andrew has over 20 years experience in defence policy making, including force structure development, capability costing, naval strategy and maritime security.
Andrew was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Flinders University in 1985; a Master of Defence Studies degree from the University of New South Wales in 1989; a Master of Arts in Maritime Policy degree from the University of Wollongong in 1999 and a Master of Public Administration degree from Queen's University, Kingston, Canada in 2001. He is also a graduate of the RAN Staff College (1996).
Andrew is Visiting Senior Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Oceans Research and Security, University of Wollongong; a Research Fellow at the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies, Dalhousie University; an Associate of the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies, Defence Academy of the United Kingdom; and is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London.
Andrew is a member of AUS-CSCAP and the Australian representative on the study groups on Maritime Capacity Building in the Asia-Pacific, and Cooperation for Asia-Pacific Energy Security; and is the Australian representative on the Steering Committee of the International SLOC Group. His research interests include defence policy and administration, naval strategy, maritime security, energy security, international shipping and the protection of trade.
Andrew is the author of Protecting the National Interest: Naval Constabulary Operations in Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone , and the editor of The Strategic Importance of Seaborne Trade and Shipping, Australian Maritime Issues 2007, and Australian Maritime Issues 2008, published by the Sea Power Centre-Australia; and editor of Sea Power: Challenges Old and New, Halstead Press, Sydney 2007. He has also written for Maritime Studies, Headmark: Journal of the Australian Naval Institute (Editor for 5 years), and the Indian Ocean Survey.
