Lionel Barrie Woodward AO

Lionel Woodward was head of the Australian Customs Service for over 11 years. He retired in December 2005. Prior to his Customs appointment, he held a number of senior appointments including:

• Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs and President of the Repatriation Commission.
• Deputy Secretary in the Department of Defence
• Deputy Secretary in the Department of Immigration

Other roles performed included:

• Vice Chairman of the World Customs Organisation
• Member of the Board of the Australian Crime Commission
• Member of the Committee of Heads of Law Enforcement and of similar             committees involving State Police Commissioners and Commonwealth agencies

He was involved in many facets of public administration notably through his contribution to the Institute of Public Administration. He is a Fellow of the Institute and was ACT President for several years.
